The National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Las Lajas (Spanish: Basílica Santuario Nacional de Nuestra Señora de las Lajas), commonly called Las Lajas Shrine (Santuario de Las Lajas), is a basilica church located in the southern Colombian Department of Nariño, in the municipality of Ipiales, and is built inside the canyon of the Guáitara River.
Historic place, with beautiful architectural site. Very crowded. Good for a half-day trip.
The National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Las Lajas (Spanish: Basílica Santuario Nacional de Nuestra Señora de las Lajas), commonly called Las Lajas Shrine (Santuario de Las Lajas), is a basilica church located in the southern Colombian Department of Nariño, in the municipality of Ipiales, and is built inside the canyon of the Guáitara River. The present church was built in a Gothic style between 1916 and 1949, taking up a total time frame of 33 years to build. The name Laja (slab) comes from the name of a type of flat sedimentary rock similar to shale and slate.
It is one of the humanity heritage monuments that we have in Colombia. The construction of the church began in January of 1916 and finished in August of 1949. Today it represents an important place to come and meditate for the people of all Colombia and for many Catholics from the north of Ecuador most of all. In the night you will see some splendid illumination of the church over all the corners of the church giving a splendid game of colors for the people that can have the chance to visit it in the night. Over the day you van have a better perspective of the magnificent place that is attached in the rocks and and the bridge that communicates to the other side of the mountain and in the bottom you can see and hear the river passing.
One of the most beautiful church I’ve ever seen!! I just sat there for 2 hours admiring this piece of art. It’s also free unless you’d like to visit the museum.
Very beautiful church, waterfall near by, many shops and nice views. Definitely worth a visit. It can get very packed though and it's pretty touristy too.
