Four hundred years ago jesuits established in Cartagena and founded a school and a church in downtown. During the XVII century a father called Pedro Claver dedicated all his life to the protection of the african slaves and became saint 300 hundred years later. To keep alive his legacy, jesuits came back to the city at the end of XIX century and started to collect pieces for a museum that includes precolombian, religious and african caribbean art and, of course, the chamber and other spaces where the saint lived and died. Nowadays it is the museum with the most complete collection of religious art in Colombian coast, and the building preserves the spirit of Claver, the spirit of Human Rights.

This beautiful cathedral was first seen (in the distance) and photographed by us while we were touring The Inquisition. Later on during our tour we had the pleasure of seeing this cathedral, its massive wooden doors (Tom is standing to the right in the picture...compare the height!) and its breath-takingly beautiful inside. Awesome!

If your a history buff or just like yo visit old building this is a must see. It's located inside the protected city. Built in the mid 1500s and destroyed and rebuilt in the late 1500 and completed in the early 1600s to the state similar to what you see now. The atmosphere is calming and serene like most churches and active catholic church one can go and attend mass or just walk in have a looky loo. Recommendations: If you have a drone bring it wish in would have brought mine. It allowed inside the city behing the wall. Pictures are allowed.

Impressive Architecture of this National Monument The Catedral de Santa Catalina dominates the skyline in the old, walled city section of Cartagena. Built in the late 1500s and finished in the early 1600s, the cathedral is known by several names, including the Cathedral of Cartagena, the Cathedral of Santa Catalina, and the Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. It’s worth a quick stop to view the interior of the church, as well as to view the exterior from the nearby Plaza Bolivar. The church is lit at night, so you can get a great night-time photograph from one of the nearby rooftop bars/restaurants.

The cathedrale is a lot more interesting to see than the boring Castello de San Felippe.
