Definitely not for every tourist. It is a huge market, filthy, unorganized and with a certain sense of being somewhat dangerous. I didn't feel unsafe but we were followed several times by locals, certainly not very well intended. But it is an adventure, an experience, and I loved it. I certainly recommend it, but only if you feel like you have the guts for it. (you see every part of an animal's body on display there!) The produce there is amazing and you can literally find just about everything that you need, from a to z! It's Colombia and Cartagena at its best, and it's nice to go out of the walled city and live an authentic experience. Also there's loads of food stalls that you can buy and try local food of! Keep your wallet and documents at home (take just some cash in small bills), don't take your expensive camera with you and don't flash your cellphone around, keep your wits about your surroundings there, and you should be fine. It also helps if you know some Spanish.

Amazing experience, but not for everyone. It's an amazing experience, it's gritty, you're surrounded by seemingly thousands of people; noise bustling pushing smells sights and amazing observations. It's not for everyone so to be clear this is not a touristy thing to do you're not going to come here with your friends or with your kids and have an entertaining experience. The traffic is crazy, the noise is over bearing, but it's really an amazing experience if you enjoy that element of travel. Some people have posted about safety. I can tell you I didn't observe a moment of fear or questioning my safety at all. Everyone there is just doing their business and going about their day and very welcoming to the visitors who come there. At the same time you have to be wise to being a visitor in another country with where your wallet is with where your cash is with how you're handling yourself and behaving. Just remain self-aware try to behave in a humble manner, behave, you'll be fine. Lots of stands with fish, yeah it smells but no big deal, and there's another section for the meats that can be something difficult to see if you're not accustomed to it. And then the fruit stands and it goes on forever and there's another section where people are making amazing dishes for lunch that's two or three dollars it's a delicious meal. I hired a guide who knows the market extremely well he was very helpful negotiated some things for me showed me around introduced me to friends of his who's a super experience.

Be sure to have Carolina of Oh La La Restaurant as your guide! Message her to set up a time and then take her cooking class at the restaurant. The experience costs 350,000 pesos and well worth it! Delicious dishes, seeing the market. Best experience wile in Cartagena!

Such a great experience! Had a delicious meal at Cecilia’s and was able to support local vendors. Daniel gave us an excellent tour of the market- you can find him on Airbnb experiences! One of the highlights of our trip

Wonderful day visiting this market. I went with a little tour run by Inside Tours. The market doesn't feel dangerous at all, but it is large and the tour, which was low key and felt like wondering round the market with a friend, made it accessable. I was worried it was going to be poverty tourism. But it wasn't in the end. Just a really fun day looking under the cover of how the city works.

Cartagena's traditional market, where you can try some local food and check out life outside the city walls. Worth the trip!

Topical Colombian markets. You can buy cloths, fresh veggies, meet and fish. It’s about a 8,000 peso taxi ride from the Old City.
